What is Fragile X syndrome and how is it related to autism?

Fragile X syndrome is a genetic condition caused by a mutation in the FMR1 gene. It is the most common known single-gene cause of autism and the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability. Approximately one-third to one-half of boys with Fragile X also receive an autism diagnosis.

Can I do ABA at home without a clinical background?

Yes. Home ABA means applying evidence-based principles to everyday interactions and short structured activities. Key elements: right environment, right motivation, right timing, and short sessions of 10-15 minutes with rich reinforcement.

What is least-to-most prompting?

Least-to-most prompting means starting with the smallest amount of help possible: Independent, Gestural, Verbal, Model, Partial Physical, Full Physical. The critical step is waiting 3-5 seconds after presenting a task before prompting.

My child hits, bites, or throws. What do I do?

Unsafe behavior is almost always communication. Four-step response: Block (calm, one flat phrase), Redirect to a replacement behavior serving the same function, Reinforce immediately when they attempt the replacement, Stay consistent across all adults.

Why does saying no always cause a meltdown?

No is often processed as a threat before the thinking brain catches up. Two strategies: No plus a Choice when the thing is not available, and Yes When with a specific condition when it is coming.

What is a Functional Behavior Assessment?

An FBA figures out why a behavior is happening. The result is a Behavior Intervention Plan. You can request one from your school district. If you disagree with the result, you have the right to an Independent Educational Evaluation, possibly at the district's expense.

What is an IEP and how do I request one?

An IEP is a legally binding document outlining the special education services your child is entitled to receive for free. Request one by writing to your school district's special education coordinator. The district typically has 60 days to complete the evaluation.

Why is potty training so hard for kids with neurodevelopmental differences?

Standard advice misses key drivers: interoception differences (body signals arrive late), sensory sensitivities (flush and cold seat can be overwhelming), GI factors like constipation (very common and often unaddressed), and anxiety about changing a routine. Always rule out medical factors first.

Why is my child such a picky eater?

Selective eating is significantly more common in children with neurodevelopmental differences. Common drivers: sensory processing differences, routine and predictability needs, anxiety history around mealtimes, and medical factors like reflux or constipation.
